Care Guide for Big Dogs

Large Breed Dogs have been a part of my family life since childhood. Over the years, our family has been home to several Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Leonberger Dogs.  Our current big furry friend is a 75kg Leonberger Dog who has no idea how large he is. Trying to sit on your lap on the couch is one of his favourite pastimes. He has nearly squashed our cat on many occasions! Needless to say, managing him can be a real challenge! I've created a list of key essentials to help you enhance your care for your large dog.

Challenges and rewards

Managing a large dog comes with unique challenges and rewards. Whether you are a new or experienced dog owner, understanding how to care for a larger breed is crucial for their health, happiness, and for your peace of mind. This guide offers some practical tips and equipment recommendations to help you provide the best care for your large canine companion.

Training and Socialization

Start Early

Training and socializing your large dog from a young age is essential. Early training helps curb undesirable behaviors and ensures your dog is well-mannered.

Consistency is Key

Be consistent with commands and routines. Large dogs respond well to clear and consistent training methods. Use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, praise, and play.

Professional Help

Consider enrolling in obedience classes or hiring a professional trainer. They can provide specialized guidance and help address any behavioral issues.

Exercise and Mental Stimulation

Regular Exercise

Large dogs need ample exercise to maintain a healthy weight and prevent boredom. Aim for at least 1-2 hours of physical activity daily, such as walking, running, or playing fetch.

Mental Stimulation

Incorporate puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions to keep your dog mentally stimulated. Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise for large breeds.

Health and Nutrition

Balanced Diet

Feed your dog a balanced diet tailored to their age, size, and activity level. Consult with your veterinarian to choose the best food and feeding schedule.

Regular Vet Check-ups

Schedule regular veterinary check-ups to monitor your dog's health, update vaccinations, and address any concerns promptly.

Joint Health

Large dogs are prone to joint issues. Provide joint supplements as recommended by your vet and ensure they have a comfortable place to rest.

Best Equipment for Managing a Large Dog

Durable Leash and Collar

Invest in a sturdy leash and collar designed for large breeds. For collars, choose a broad, durable one made from materials like leather or nylon that can withstand the strength of a large dog.

Handles are a great Dog Collar feature for control and training bigger dogs. K9 Kingdom stocks a range of Collars with handles specifically with big dogs in mind.

When it comes to choosing a lead make sure it is at least 1.8 meters long to allow some freedom of movement while maintaining control. Choose a dog harness with a handle for added control when walking.

Harnesses

A sturdy, well-fitting harness is recommended for large dogs, as it distributes pressure across the chest and back, preventing strain on the neck. Look for a harness with adjustable straps and ample padding for comfort.

The K9 Kingdom Dog Harness Range have all been designed with the essential harness features  for a bigger dog including:

  • Sturdy easy-grip handles
  • Wide strong buckles and straps
  • Durable, washable padded Nylon
  • Metal D-link for easy Leash attachment
  • Simple slip on design for ease of use

Comfortable Bed

Choose a large, supportive bed that accommodates your dog's size. Orthopedic beds are ideal for older dogs or those with joint issues.

Feeding Bowls

Opt for elevated feeding bowls to reduce strain on your dog's neck and promote better digestion.

Grooming Tools

Regular grooming is essential for large dogs. Invest in high-quality brushes, nail clippers, and good-quality dog shampoo suited to your dog's coat type.

Conclusion

Managing a large dog requires dedication, patience, and the right equipment. By following these tips and investing in quality gear, you can ensure your large dog leads a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life. Remember, each dog is unique, so tailor your approach to meet their individual needs and preferences.
